Faces of Astrion: Bobby Brown

Driving Navy & MDA Growth Through Strategy, Integration, and Mission Impact

The Faces of Astrion series celebrates the talented, innovative and dedicated individuals who drive our mission forward. Through these spotlights, we’re highlighting the experience, insights and passion of team members who make real impact every day. Recently promoted to Vice President of Business Development for Navy & MDA, Bobby Brown brings a mission-first mindset and decades of operational and strategic experience to Astrion. A retired U.S. Navy commander and naval aviator, Bobby now leads high-impact growth initiatives that support some of the nation’s most critical defense priorities.

Q: Tell us a bit about your role.

Bobby: I lead the end-to-end business development lifecycle for Navy and MDA opportunities, from strategic identification and qualification through proposal development and contract award. My focus is on shaping and winning high-value pursuits by driving informed strategy, price-to-win positioning, and disciplined execution.

I partner closely with account managers and enterprise leadership to ensure alignment with market strategy and sustained organic growth, while maintaining ownership of the pipeline, forecasting accuracy, and overall portfolio health.

Success in this role requires close coordination across the enterprise, ensuring we deliver differentiated, competitive solutions aligned to customer priorities and mission outcomes.

Q: What has been your favorite project at Astrion?

Bobby: Experiencing the Astry Awards ceremony firsthand, hearing leadership speak to the winners’ impact and seeing winners being celebrated was both meaningful and motivating. It reinforced the level of excellence and mission impact across Astrion.

Q: What is interesting about you?

Bobby: Professionally, I’ve always been drawn to roles that require both strategic thinking and relationship building. I enjoy connecting dots across organizations, identifying patterns in the market, and helping teams move from ideas to execution. I’m particularly interested in how emerging technologies like AI, advanced sensors, and integrated systems, are transforming defense capabilities.

Personally, I enjoy golf and the unique challenges it provides. It’s a game that reinforces focus, resilience, and adaptability. No two days are the same, and you have to reset quickly after a bad shot. That mindset carries over into how I approach both work and life. I also value strong relationships and believe trust and collaboration are the foundation of any successful endeavor.

Q: What does the future of Navy & MDA look like?

Bobby: The future of the Navy and MDA is increasingly defined by integration, speed, and adaptability. We’re seeing a shift toward more distributed and networked systems, where data, sensors, and weapons platforms are seamlessly connected to create a more resilient and responsive force.

For the Navy, that means greater emphasis on maritime dominance through autonomous systems, advanced analytics, and integrated command and control. For MDA, the focus continues to evolve toward layered, integrated missile defense architectures capable of addressing more sophisticated and diverse threats.

Across both domains, there will be growing reliance on digital engineering, artificial intelligence, and rapid capability deployment. Success will depend not only on technological superiority, but also on the ability to integrate systems across services and domains. Industry partners like Astrion play a critical role in helping the government move faster, innovate smarter, and deliver capabilities at the pace of need.

Q: What motivates you in life?

Bobby: I’m motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, both professionally and personally. Knowing that the work we do contributes to national security and supports those on the front lines is a strong driver.

I’m also motivated by growth, continuously learning, taking on new challenges, and helping others succeed. Whether it’s mentoring team members, building high-performing teams, or solving complex problems, I find energy in progress and purpose. At the end of the day, it’s about contributing to something larger than yourself and leaving a positive, lasting impact.

Q: What advice would you give your younger self?

Bobby: Maintain perspective, take your work seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously. A sense of humor goes a long way, especially in high-pressure environments.

Prioritize family and the people who matter most. Success is meaningful, but it’s not everything.

And don’t be afraid to make mistakes, especially the recoverable ones. Some of the best growth comes from taking smart risks, learning quickly, and moving forward with greater clarity and confidence.

Q: What has been the best invention and why?

Bobby: Artificial intelligence platforms, because they are transforming decision-making, automation, and national security applications in ways that are redefining what’s possible.
